ABBA 40TH ANNIVERSARY EVENING

Abba-3378404

'THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC !!'

A few weeks ago, Adam came home from work with a rather large square black envelope in his hand - and rather more surprisingly, it was addressed to me !! Turns out it was a VIP invitation that every Abba fan would just die to get their hands on...

Yes - last night, Adam and I had the great pleasure of attending the Official 40th Birthday celebrations of Swedish pop sensation and all-round Swedish national treasure Abba, which took place in London at the Tate Modern gallery. The reason for this unusual choice of venue ? It was the only place big enough to house 1500 fans and guests, that happened to be pretty much right next door to the station that bears the name of their first major, and incidentally,  Eurovision Song Contest hit - 'Waterloo', of course !!

The reason that we received these fantastic tickets was because their publisher was also taking the opportunity to launch a huge coffee-table book full of fabulous colour photos, chronicling the bands rise and rise to fame and fortune, and their gradual disintegration as the two couples, Agnetha/Björn and Anni-frid (Frida)/Benny both finally divorced - the strain of being married and working together all the time being too much for their respective relationships, I guess.

As Adam is now the Book-Buyer for the RHS shops, he gets all kinds of invitations to various book-launches, and if it's a good one, I usually get to go as his guest - what fun !!

Here's the blurb:-

ABBA – THE OFFICIAL PHOTO BOOK is the first authorised and official photo book about one of the greatest pop groups of the 20th century. The group has sold almost 400 million records, in some markets topping The Beatles, and still selling millions every year!

“I am thrilled with all of these pictures, some of which I am seeing now for the very first time. The book provides a real trip down memory lane” – Frida.

The book has the full co-operation of Björn, Benny, Frida and Agnetha, who have contributed a foreword. This extraordinary book contains more than 600 pictures, more than 100 of which have never previously been published.

ABBA have chosen to work with Max Ström, one of Europe’s finest illustrated publishers, to produce this official book. Award-winning picture editor Bengt Wanselius and two of Sweden’s most talented writers Petter Karlsson and Jan Gradvall, scrutinised almost a quarter of a million pictures to bring you this unique collection.

'ABBA - The Official Photo Book' is published by Max Strom (www.maxstrom.se); Hardback RRP £35.00

Here's a little piece from Reuter's News report on the evening, and as you can see, both Frida and Björn turned up !!:-

Some of the photos in this book are quite intimate snapshots, as you can see :-

Wow - get a load of this amazing 70s lounge !

OUR EVENING !!

Here we are entering the Tate, and as you can see, it's a vast space - like a runway down into an underground car park !! This building used to be a power station and so this main hall is the old Turbine Hall. A Huge screen at the end with the front cover photo of the book, over the stage, and several screens along each side with videos playing, and showing the stage events as they happened.

Tata Modern 02

Lots of fun stuff, including cardboard cut-outs for photo-opportunities !! Here, I've found an A...

Frida 01

Next I found a B...

Bjorn 01

Then I just couldn't help but join the band !!

Abba 01

We had been given red wrist bands, which to our great excitement, entitled us to free drinks as well as free entry...woohoo - hurrah for book publishers !!

Sadly no free copy of the book, as there is a very limited print run for Britain...but it's a really great book if you love Abba, I have to say !! The huge prints hanging in a little mini-exhibition were fascinating glimpse into their private lives, and what it was like to be in a successful band in the 70s.

ABBA FAVES...
