SOUTH OF FRANCE FUN !!...

It's been a very busy few weeks, what with my Fashion Journal, [info]wendylady2 being inundated with 500 or so new friends and loads of events in the Fashion Calendar to cover...and at work, with the latest Spring Promotion being installed, and now I am thinking up plots and schemes for the Spring Fashion Accessories window, which will be installed in early April...

So, I have a well-deserved week off this week...and never have I been in more need of a short break than now !!

On Wednesday, we are off to this beautiful place, in the South of France :-

This is the old, medieval walled French city of Carcassonne...

This is a long-promised birthday present, actually, to our good friend Chris, who organises our annual trip to Cesky Krumlov, in the Czech Rep., every year, and we have had the hardest time getting a few days when we can all have the time off at the same time...that is Adam and I, Chris, and his good friend Neil and his wife Tina, who are also chipping in...

The five of us are leaving on Wednesday morning for Stansted Airport, our flight is at 11.25 am, and we will arrive in Carcassonne around 2.30pm....we stay for three days or so, and return on Saturday afternoon...

What fun !!

This is one of the oldest, walled-castle, fortified cities in the South of France...here's a map to show you exactly where it is, in relation to the Mediterranean coastline, and also, the northern border of the Spanish province of Aragon...( where Katherine came from, before marrying Henry VIII !! )

Carcassonne is just to the left of Perpignon down at the bottom of the map...as you can see, right next to Aragon itself !!

This is the Languedoc region, one of France's finest wine-growing regions, so, as you can imagine, we'll be doing justice to the local produce with enthusiastic gusto !!

The town itself, from inside the city walls, looks largely like this :-

and from the outside, it looks largely like this :-

How utterly romantic !!

Our hotel is actually a small B & B, rather like a typical French country maison de famille, and it looks like this :-

Good courtyard garden, to sit out and have a glass of vin blanc... I am loving this place already !!

At night the whole city is lit up with floodlights, like this :-

The whole idea for this short break, was to go and play our game of "Carcassonne", actually in the real city of the same name - how geekily cool is that ?!!
It's like playing " Quo Vadis" in Rome, or "Pompeii" in Pompeii...

( Blimey - how many Roman-themed board games do we own ?!! )

The game of "Carcassonne" is one of the most popular tile-laying board games of modern times, and it looks like this :-

The original game is the blue box, and all the rest are variations ...all marvellous fun and definitely worth playing !!

We return on Saturday, and so, you can all expect a good account of our travels in this marvellous part of the world, along with lots of pics, I hope, on Sunday !!

See you then...

A local friend has gotten me hooked on EuroGames, and this was the first one. Enjoy the namesake!

Mother,
Aha - "Eurogames" - is that what they're called over there ?!! Anyway, we love 'em, and have about 2 - 3 hundred, mostly German, because they are the Masters of the Game-playing Universe, as you know...

"Carcassonne" is one of the best - we have most of the variations too, especially "The Castle", which has actual 3D walls around it, with the requisite turrets, that you build as you go through the game..what fun !!

H_D looooves Carcasonne, the game. He pronounces it "carcas-own" which has a vaguely necrophiliac sound to it. I'll bet the french pronunciation is fab. However you say it, have fun, and please take pictures!

Honey,
Now, this is what I can never understand about the American way of saying the 'O' vowel...it is always said as a long 'O' as in 'tone' or 'alone' - and that seems to be regardless of how the word is meant to be pronounced, and probably is, by the rest of the World...or that may well be a regional accent thing, as in California ?!! How do you say it ?...

The French say this name as a half-way pronunciation between 'Car-cass-eune' I suppose, as in jeune fille and the bonne sound, as in the Sorbonne...Oh, it's very hard to write how a word is pronounced, but you know what I mean, I expect !!

We are so looking forward to these few days, as this is somewhere we have wanted to go for a number of years...

ha ha! Don't forget the "oo" sound, as in look and cook. It's an American thing. You all say "o" more like our double "oo" sound, but with a hint of "u" tossed in, which I hear when you say "London", but had never really thought about as a general British "o" thing until now. Interesting.

BTW, H_D and I agree that going to Carcasonne to play Carcasonne is supremely and delightfully geeky! :D

Alldoneup,
Yes, I'm expecting it to be a complete medieval town, in the same way that Bath is a complete Georgian city here...it is also a World Heritage site - always a good bet, I find !!

Alyon,
I am hoping that there will be some - I could well do with some right now - I'm sick of the cold, windy, rainy weather we've been having !!

At the moment, it is about 17-20 degrees Celsius there, which is a respectably warm, upper-60s F type of temperature...

It sounds like a fantastic plan and the place looks gorgeous! There are some great places in France, I remember visiting the Loire Valley and its castles, I was stunned!

Yes, I noticed Aragon, and I immediately thought about Catherine of Aragon .. I'm a Tudors addict now, you know!

Have a wonderful time, dear!

*many hugs*

I got right on-line and ordered that board game. I'm a huge fan of games and this looks like a good one to play with my neighbors at our monthly martini parties.
